Russia's Megafon is reported to have short-listed five companies as suppliers for its US$1 billion 3G network rollout. Local tech publication, CNews names Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, NEC, Nokia-Siemens and Huawei as the five companies which have been invited to submit formal tenders.
MegaFon-GSM network is currently using Nokia equipment in the European part of Russia, Siemens equipment in the Volga and Urals Region, Huawei Technologies in Siberia and Far East.
It is expected that the rollout will be shared between at least two suppliers.
MegaFon launched the first part of its 3G network, in St. Petersburg last week - while MTS and VimpleCom are still testing their network deployment. A report in the RBC Daily newspaper at the time said that the company plans to expand the network next year to all 16 regions.
