Russia's VimpleCom has announced that its Armenian subsidiary, ArmenTel have been granted a 3G license in Armenia. VimpleCom recently increased its holding in ArmenTel to 100%. The license covers the 1920-1935 MHz and 2110-2125 MHz bands. The company also recently lost its monopoly on providing landline services and new entrants are expected to be granted licenses later this month.
VimpleCom's Russian rival, MTS recently acquired an 80% holding in Armenia's VivaCell is also expected to be granted a 3G license shortly.
ArmenTel ended the first half of this year with some 470,000 subscribers according to recent figures from the Mobile World service. VivaCell (K-Telecom) is the market leader though, with an estimated 955,000 subscribers.
