Iran Has More Mobile Phones Than Landlines

Iran has more mobile phones than landlines after the cellphone penetration rate passed the 33% mark. The Chairman of Telecommunications Company of Iran (TCI), Vafa Ghaffarian told the Iran Daily newspaper that the country is also planning to launch two more nationwide cellphone networks, bringing the total to five in the country.

He said that the state owned operator, TCI currently has 19.5 million customers, with IranCell having 3.5 million customers and Taliya picking up one million. If two regional regional operators, Kish and Isfahan bring the total to over 24 million customers in Iran.

Ghaffarian said that the provinces of Tehran (5.5million), Isfahan (1.4million), Fars (1.2million), Hamedan (1.18million) and Khuzestan (1.12million) rank first to fifth respectively in terms of the number of cellphone users.

The market is expected to grow by five million customers over the next six months.
