Ecuador's Suptel Asks Operators to Guarantee Service During Election

Ecuador's telecoms supervisory body Suptel has asked telephony companies to take measures to avoid service interruptions during the national elections to form a new constitutional assembly on September 30, Suptel said in a statement.

According to Suptel head Paul Rojas, fixed line operators Andinatel, Pacifictel and Etapa, and mobile phone companies Porta, a unit of Mexican giant America Movil, Movistar, of Spain's Telefonica, and locally owned Alegro PCS, should implement technical and contingency plans to avoid congestion or collapse of networks.

Fixed and mobile operators should also designate technical personnel to coordinate with Suptel's officials during the elections to fill the 130 seats in the constitutional assembly.

Suptel also said it will monitor the situation to avoid problems with communications.
