Anatel: Mobile Subscribers Hit 111mn in Aug
Brazil added 2.4mn new mobile lines in August to end the month with 111mn, up 2.22% compared to-July, local telecoms regulator Anatel said in a statement.
Prepaid lines accounted for 80.3% of the total mobile base at the end of August while postpaid lines represented the remainder.
Anatel said that during the first eight months of 2007 net additions of mobile lines totaled 11mn, an increase of 26.6% on the same period last year. Meanwhile, the country added 16mn new mobile lines during the last 12 months.
The mobile penetration rate in the country was 58.6% at end-August compared to 57.4% at the end-July.
Capital Brasilia had a mobile penetration rate of 111.4%, the highest in the nation at the end of August, followed by Rio de Janeiro state with 73.9% and the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul with 71.9%.
