Sao Paulo Underground Railway Approves Mobile Phone Project

Subway company Metro, serving Brazil's largest city Sao Paulo, has accepted proposals from five mobile phone companies for a 10mn-real (US$5.1mn) project to set up infrastructure for signal reception in tunnels, newspaper Gazeta Mercantil reported.
The five operators - Vivo, Claro, TIM, Unicel and Nextel - are expected to divide the cost equally for the project, which is expected to be in place at the start of 2008, Gazeta reported.
The operators are responsible for the total investment in the infrastructure, according to Maria Cristina Bastos, manager for projects related to new business at Metro.
The phone companies are expected to sign cooperation agreements with Metro before September 15, the newspaper said.
Metro registered net losses of 499mn reais in 2006, despite handling 564mn passengers last year, 10% more than the year before.
