HP to Help Vodafone Portugal Combat Fraud

HP has announced that Vodafone Portugal will deploy its Fraud Management System (HP FMS) to mitigate fraudulent activity on its mobile and fixed networks. HP FMS has been implemented at more than 80 service providers worldwide and helps protect revenue gathered from more than 300 million subscribers.

"Many of the innovative services that Vodafone Portugal is providing its customers also require more sophisticated fraud management," said Augusto Argento, director, Enterprise Risk Management Business Unit, Communications, Media and Entertainment, HP. "HP is working closely with Vodafone Portugal to deploy our fraud management solution to replicate the success it has earned with other operators around the world."

Fraud losses are difficult to measure since most fraud goes undetected or unreported, however, industry observers estimate the annual figure to be up to $60 billion worldwide. As mobile commerce increases, operators are more vulnerable to costly "hard losses," in which they must pay for content, products or services that are stolen from a third party.
