US mobile handset manufacturer Motorola aims to secure US$60mn in revenues from communications device projects in 2007 compared to US$70mn last year, a senior Motorola Brasil executive told BNamericas.
The reason the estimate is lower for 2007 is because a lot of the company's human resources are working on a major turnkey project with the São Paulo police force this year, meaning they can concentrate less time on getting new projects, Eduardo Kamigauti, sales director for Motorola's government and public service department, said.
Kamigauti's department focuses a lot on projects for public sector bodies such as the police and fire brigade as well as companies like power distribution company Eletropaulo, Rio de Janeiro-based mining and metals giant CVRD and federal energy company Petrobras.
The projects are usually for specific types of communications devices such as walkie-talkies and not mobile phones.
Kamigauti hopes to extend the contract with the São Paulo police force beyond this year. The police have 14,000 portable radios with policemen on the beat or in patrol cars and this could be extended by 25,000, according to Kamigauti.
The department, which sells directly to customers, recently secured a substantial part of a 2mn-real (US$1.04mn) deal with the Curitiba metropolitan police force to modernize its communications systems."
