Motorola to Start Producing Specialized Wireless Devices at Factory

US mobile handset manufacturer Motorola is planning to start producing in July wireless devices equipped for high-speed data access at its factory in Jaguariúna in Brazil's São Paulo state, newspaper Gazeta Mercantil reported.

"Initially, the production will serve the Brazilian internal market, but the idea is to export to the rest of Latin America," Gazeta reported Motorola project director Marcelo Catapani as saying.

The new devices will include the wireless core of a telematics solution, which is produced for local wireless technology company Crown Telecom and that will be included in all passenger vehicles made by German carmaker Volkswagen in Brazil.

Motorola will also produce handheld PDA type products that utility companies can use to measure or control the amount of electricity, gas or water used by customers, a Motorola press officer told BNamericas.

According to research by local research group Itelogy Partners, there will be 2.3mn such devices with internet connections in Brazil by 2008 compared to 514,000 in 2005 and 971,000 in 2006.

The Brazilian market for these wireless devices should jump to US$1.32bn in 2008 compared to US$387mn in 2005 and US$652mn in 2006, the research said.

Motorola sees good growth in this area, the press officer said without giving any details about targets."
