Personal, the mobile unit of telecoms operator Telecom Argentina, expects to have 1mn customers using 3G services within two years, the company's marketing director Guillermo Rivaben told BNamericas.
The company recently launched 3G in a limited area in capital Buenos Aires and has said it expects to expand coverage to the rest of the city as well as the cities of Córdoba and Rosario by the end of the year and to all the provincial capitals within two years.
"The original plan for this year includes the most important markets for us," Rivaben said.
Personal is currently offering its clients two 3G compatible handsets from South Korea's Samsung and LG and expects to offer over 15 mobile devices by year-end.
"Since we launched the 3G areas other manufacturers such as Sony Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia have accelerated their plans to launch these devices," Rivaben said.
The 3G launch is part of a 500mn-peso (US$162mn) investment program announced by the company last November to offer 3G nationwide.
Among the 3G services Personal is currently offering to its customers are videoconferencing, multimedia downloads, email and instant messaging services at higher speeds.
Personal also launched a mobile broadband service called 3G Connect that enables users to access high speed broadband from a laptop using a PC card. According to Rivaben the cost of the PC card is 900 pesos."
