Sony Ericsson Starts Work on 3rd Chinese Handset Factory

Sony Ericsson has broken ground on a new handset factory in China in a move which aims to make the country its global manufacturing base. The new factory will cover an area of 18,500 square meters and is being slotted between two existing Sony Ericsson facilities.

Gunilla Nordstrom, president of Sony Ericsson China, told the official Xinhua news agency that the establishment of the new factory would contribute to the consolidation of China's status as the company's strategic development base.

The new factiry will be located between the company's other two facilities, Beijing Se Putian Mobile Communications (BMC), which covers 25,610 square meters and produces mobile handsets, and Beijing Suohong Electronics (BSE), which covers 12,000 square meters and manufactures printed circuit boards. Sony Ericsson owns 51% of BMC and is the sole owner of BSE.

A spokesperson for Sony Ericsson China told Xinhua that BMC represented roughly one-third of Sony Ericsson's global manufacturing volume with direct shipment to 119 countries and regions, but would not give the new plant's production capacity."
