Dominican Republic mobile operator Orange Dominicana, owned by France Telecom, has deployed "visual voice SMS" (VSMS) services from US mobile solutions provider Kodiak Networks, its first deployment in the Americas, Kodiak said in a statement.
VSMS allows a customer to record a voice message of up to 20 seconds. Its advantage over regular voice mail is that a message can be recorded and sent to multiple recipients.
According to Kodiak's CEO Craig Farrill, the VSMS service is more user friendly than a regular voice inbox, which he says many people do not even use.
Farrill believes the service will generate greater traffic volume and some carriers have seen ARPU gains of up to 30%.
"From the carrier point of view it's more minutes and more messages which spells more ARPU and more profit," Farrill told BNamericas.
Kodiak is also in talks with other Latin American operators and Farrill expects more commercial launches this year, though he would not provide any further details."
