Movistar Ends Q1 with over 370,000 Clients in Arequipa"

Peruvian mobile operator Movistar ended the first quarter of 2007 with over 370,000 subscribers and a market share of 65% in the nation's second largest city of Arequipa, local press reported.

According to the company's provincial sales and development director José Gamero, revenues in Arequipa grew 180% in the quarter compared to the same period in 2006.

To sustain the growth in the Arequipa area Movistar recently deployed base stations in towns close by including Chivay, Cerro Verde and Ciudad Blanca, and plans to deploy more base stations in the short term.

Movistar Perú, a unit of Spanish giant Telefónica (NYSE: TEF) has over 6mn clients nationwide."
