Bolivian incumbent operator Entel is planning a two-pronged project to bring modern cellular technology and internet to over 130 communities, local press reported.
The first stage of the project, called Overlay, will deploy a GSM overlay on the existing TDMA technology in 44 rural communities extending coverage to certain highways and guaranteeing handoff when moving into rural areas.
In parallel, a program called Telefonía Móvil Rural is expected to provide GSM and internet services to 90 towns.
As part of the latter project, 20 base stations have already been deployed in the Beni, Chuquisaca, La Paz, Oruro, Potosí, Santa Cruz and Tarija departments.
Entel is also deploying infrastructure in rural areas as part of a connectivity agreement called Vivir sin fronteras between the company and the government."
