Quanta Reported to Have Won Apple iPhone Contract

The stock market valuation of Taiwan's Quanta Computer jumped sharply early yesterday morning after local newspapers reported that the company had won an order to manufacture 5 million iPhone handsets. Quanta, a contract laptop PC manufacturer, will start making iPhones in September, the Chinese language Commercial Times reported on Tuesday, without citing sources.

Quanta Computer refused to ccomment on the story, citing commercial confidentiality. A source at Quanta said the company has not won orders for the iPhone yet, but that the company is stongly competing for the contract.

Hon Hai Precision Industry is currently believed to be the main manufacturer for the Apple iPhone. The company does not comment on customer orders, but is already a contractor for Apple. "
