Colombia's largest mobile operator Comcel, owned by Mexico's América Móvil, plans to roll out a WCDMA/HSDPA network for 3G services in the first quarter of 2008, local daily Portafolio quoted Comcel's president Adrián Hernández as saying.
The operator has already made a formal request to the country's communications ministry, Mincomunicaciones, for additional spectrum space to deploy the network.
AMX has said the majority of its 2007 capex will go towards the rollout. By the end of the year, the company expects to have 3G networks running in 30-40 cities.
The launch of the network is part of Comcel's focus to boost its average revenue per user (ARPU) by promoting the use of data services. According to the report, around 7% of the company's current ARPU corresponds to data traffic.
The company expects its subscriber base to reach 23.5mn by year-end compared to 18.3mn at end-2006, Hernández added."
