Tribunal To Extend Investigation Into Qualcomm Patent Dispute

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- The International Trade Commission said Friday it was extending its investigation into the potential damages it would levy as a result of patent dispute between Qualcomm and Broadcom.

The tribunal was expected to issue a decision Friday as to what if any action Qualcomm must take after the ITC previously found that it was infringing on a Broadcom patent.

But in a brief statement released on its Web site, it said it had decided to extend its investigation for 13 days until June 7.

The ITC must decide whether to impose no penalty on Qualcomm, a partial ban of third generation, or 3G, cellular phones using one type of its technology in their microchips, or a total ban of all 3G phones using its technology in their microchips.
