Nokia Planning to Expand Indian Factory
Nokia is reported to be ramping up production capacity at its Indian factory after the company was able to ship 25 million handsets in one year from the facility. Asked whether Nokia plans to invest further to ramp up its capacity, Soren Pterson, Senior Vice President, Entry Business Unit Mobile Phone, Nokia, told the Press Trust of India, "from the Chennai factory we shipped more than 25 million phones. We are very happy with the performance. It is running just as per our plans."
"I expect that we shall increase the capacity. But how much and when and what what will be the investment, we are looking at all these issues," he added.
About 80% of the handsets produced at the Chennai factory are for the domestic market, with the rest exported to neighbouring countries - excluding Pakistan where local dealers have difficulty selling Indian produced phones.
Nokia has also previously located its Nokia Global Networks Solutions Center in Chennai. The Solutions Center performs network operation tasks for selected operator customers in the Asia Pacific region as well as Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It currently employs around 100 people, with this figure expected to rise in the next few years."
