Ireland's telecoms regulator, the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) has announced that the winner of the auction for the spectrum band 1785 - 1805 MHz is Personal Broadband UK.
ComReg has offered Personal Broadband UK a 15-year technology and service-neutral licence at a cost of €205,000 which is subject to Personal Broadband UK's acceptance of, and compliance with, the terms and conditions of the licence offer.
The auction was the first in a two-part process involving a joint approach to licensing with the UK regulator Ofcom. Ofcom will shortly launch the second stage of the process by auctioning a similar licence in Northern Ireland.
Commissioner Mike Byrne, Chairperson of ComReg, welcoming the outcome said "This auction is the result of continuing close co-operation between the two telecom regulators on the island of Ireland. This licence has the potential to introduce more competition in wireless markets in Ireland for the benefit of consumers. ComReg will continue to work closely with Ofcom with the objective of introducing services to benefit businesses and consumers throughout the island of Ireland."
