25% of Teens Would Buy an iPhone - Report

A study carried out in the USA by analysts at Piper Jaffray has reported that there is a very high awareness of the new Apple iPhone amongst teens - and a strong interest in purchasing the handset despite its fairly high price point. Of the students surveyed by Piper Jaffray, 84% had heard of the iPhone, and 25% would buy an iPhone at the US$500 price point.

Piper Jaffray says that while they expected a high product awareness for the new iPhone, they had reasonably presumed that the high price point would be a deterant to teenagers being able to purchase the handset. But their survey indicated that 25% of high school students said they would buy an iPhone for US$500.

The analysts had been predicting sales of around 660,000 units in 2007 and 4 million in 2008. They now say that if 20% of the students who said they wanted to buy the handset (or just 5% of the actual survey) actually do make the purchase - then the predicted sales figures could be conservative.
