Research in Motion has started to recover from a serious outage of their email platform which started late last night. RIM issued a statement saying that a "service interruption occurred Tuesday night that affected BlackBerry in North America. Email delivery was delayed or intermittent during the service interruption." However, there have had reports of outages coming in from all over the world, although it is not immediately clear if these are US customers who are roaming overseas.
The company says that service has been restored to most of its customers, although there could be delays in delivering messages. RIM is still investigating what caused the outage.
Mark Siegel, a spokesman for Cingular Wireless said RIM had told the network operator that service was restored to BlackBerry users as of 6am EDT. "It's obviously going to take some time to clear out the accumulated backlog of message traffic," he said. "I don't know how long that will take."
Customers calling RIM customer care were given just a recorded message, stating that the company is "currently experiencing a service interruption that is causing delays in sending or receiving messages."
