O2 Ireland has announced an agreement with local energy supplier, Energia to source green energy for its complete electricity needs in Ireland. The contract will lead to a reduction of over 240,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, the equivalent of removing 60,000 cars from Irish roads.
Under the agreement, Energia will supply all sites controlled by O2 throughout the country, including all O2 retail outlets and O2 masts. A programme to switch over all O2 sites to green energy, including O2's headquarters in Dublin's docklands and its customer care centre in Limerick, was completed at the end of March 2007.
Commenting on the contract, Tony Hanway, Director - O2 Ireland, said, "This year, more than ever, the world is focused on global warming, and the changes in behaviour that are required to secure our planet for future generations. In O2, with a nationwide communications network, we are keen to ensure that the manner in which we conduct our business is environmentally sustainable. In conjunction with Energia, we have already completed the switch over to green energy. Other environmental initiatives we operate include a robust waste management system to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and increase our recycling rates year on year. We have also installed a biodegradable food waste management system which will enable us to achieve further decreases in waste to landfill."
Energia recently agreed contracts worth around half a billion Euro to underpin the construction of 15 new wind farms in Ireland, due for completion between 2007 and 2009."
