Sun Microsystems Buys Mobile OS Developer

Published on:

Sun Microsystems has announced that it is to buy up all of SavaJe Technologies intellectual property assets. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. SavaJe (pronounced savage) is the developer of the SavaJe OS, a Java OS for mobile phones. Based on Sun Microsystems' Micro Edition, their phones offer a Swing-based development platform for creating handset platforms which could be customised by operators, or other 3rd party distributors.

The company has been in financial troubles for some months, and the buy out by Sun will "save" their product developments.

SavaJe Technologies is a privately held company, which has been funded by leading venture capital firms, including Ridgewood Capital, Vodafone and Orange. The company is estimated to have raised over US$70 million from its investors. Additional information regarding the sale will be unveiled at the annual JavaOne Conference next month."
