BenQ Selects Chips for Taiwan Mobile TV Trials
Taiwan's Siano Mobile Silicon has announced that its SMS1010 multi-standard mobile TV receiver chip has been selected by BenQ to enable MDTV in BenQ's 3G and 2.5G mobile phones, targeting commercial launch in Europe and Asia in 2008.
In addition, Siano and BenQ announced their joint participation in the DVB-H commercial trial currently undertaken in Taiwan.
The DVB-H trial in Taiwan is carried out by a collection of companies that include Public Television Service Foundation (PTS), mobile operators Chunghwa Telecomm (CHT) and Taiwan Mobile (TWM), Fareastone Communications (FET), terminal makers BenQ and Motorola, and multimedia software provider CyberLink.
"The purpose of the DVB-H trial in Taiwan, in addition to evaluating the coverage and network structures, and the DVB-H equipment and terminals is also to collect the end user feedback, and make the necessary preparations for the expected commercial roll-out of DVB-H," said Yuan-Hui Hu, President of PTS. "Therefore, it is extremely important that a world leading made-in-Taiwan brand such as BenQ participates in the trial, added Yuan-Hui Hu.
BenQ's DVB-H mobile phones currently under design use Siano's SMS1010, a single chip receiver for mobile TV."
