Taiwan based handset vendors may be offered an opportunity to develop a US$10 handset as part of an initiative sponsored by the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) of University of California at Berkeley.
A report in the local Digitimes news publication, citing unnamed sources said that CITRIS had contacted a number of Taiwanese companies, including Foxconn, Compal Communications and Quanta Computer to develop a low cost handset for sale in developing countries.
The initiative expects demand for the low cost handsets to reach as many as 500 million units over the lifetime of the project, which is modeled on MIT's One Laptop per Child initiative.
The report said that with handsets currently reaching a low of US$15, reaching the $10 mark could be achieved within two years."
