Wind Telecom to Deploy WiMax Broadband Network

Dominican Republic broadband ISP greenfield operator Wind Telecom plans to deploy a WiMax network provided by Canadian telecoms equipment supplier Nortel, Nortel said in a statement.

Wind expects the network to be running commercially by September 2007 on the 2.5Ghz frequency. The company plans to eventually offer data, voice and video in the cities of Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata and Bávaro.

According to the statement, Wind sees the competitiveness of the Dominican Republic's market as being an advantage for new companies planning to roll out services.

"The investment environment [in the Dominican Republic] favors competition and innovation, allowing a greenfield operator with cutting-edge disruptive technology to enter the market and become a prime competitor," Wind Telecom's chairman of the board José Clase said in the statement.

In addition to supplying the equipment, Nortel will also be responsible for the deployment, support and maintenance of the wireless network."
