S Korea SK Telecom Launches Nationwide HSDPA Services

SEOUL -(Dow Jones)- South Korea's SK Telecom, Wednesday said it is launching advanced third-generation mobile services across the country, two months ahead of schedule, to compete with KT Freetel.

SK Telecom said in a statement it has completed the nationwide rollout of its high-speed downlink packet access, or HSDPA, network to offer advanced wireless services.

HSDPA, which is an enhancement to the third-generation wireless technology WCDMA, allows faster and seamless data transfer on mobile phones, enabling users to use multimedia features such as video telephony.

SK Telecom, Korea's top wireless carrier by revenue, has invested about KRW1.8 trillion ($1.9 billion) between 2005 and 2006 in expanding the network and plans to spend an additional KRW610 billion this year, a company spokesman said in February.

KT Freetel, the country's second-largest mobile carrier, began its nationwide HSDPA services in late February.
