Winamp Launches Mobile Music Streaming Service

Winamp, the venerable music player for PC's has launched a mobile version which would allow users to stream their PC music collection to their mobile phone.

The service works in conjunction with the streaming provider, Orb Networks.

Users have to install software on their PC's to enable the streaming, but they use just their existing mobile web browser on their handsets - no need to install anything into the phone itself. No DRM protected music can be streamed over the service though.

"The move into the mobile marketplace underscores our primary objective of providing consumers with the definitive media playback and discovery experience, across multiple platforms," said Matthew Callaway, Product Director for Winamp and SHOUTcast.

"This is a very customizable media player; users can create skins and plug-ins making it whatever you want it to look like," he added.

Winamp is owned by AOL."
