Entel Expands WiMax Coverage

Chilean fixed line operator Entel has expanded its WiMax coverage through the addition of 18 antennas in 14 cities and towns, the company said in a statement.

The addition brings Entel's total number of antennas throughout Chile to 40 and the company expects to add another 30 this year, the statement said.

The antennas cover a radius of around 15km. The company launched its WiMax network in September 2006 and plans to continue migrating customers off its WLL network, BNamericas previously reported.

Entel is targeting SME clients with the coverage during the first stage of the rollout, which has required investment of around US$20mn.

"In the first months of this operation we already have more than 2,000 clients," Entel products and marketing manager Alfonso Emperanza said in the statement.

The announcement comes on the heels of one of Entel's competitors, the Chilean unit of fixed line operator Telmex, launching WiMax service in 15 cities."
