Belgium Starts Payments by Mobile Phone

Belgium's mobile operators have teamed up to offer secure payments over their mobile phones. The service will be made accessible to anyone having a Bancontact/Mister Cash bank card and a GSM operating on one of the three Belgian mobile telephone networks.

It is quick and simple to do:

  • The beneficiary of the payment makes a request on their GSM;
  • The customer receives an SMS, and confirms the payment using a secret code;
  • The customer and the merchant then each receive a message confirming the transaction.

This service relies on m-banxafe technology developed by Banksys, and guarantees fully secure payments. Customers wishing to pay by GSM must have a SIM card enabled for m-banxafe technology.

This project is the brainchild of Banksys, BASE, Mobistar, Proximus and the Belgian banks."
