Brazilian pay TV company TVA and US mobile handset manufacturer Motorola are building a mobile WiMax network for trials in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the latter said in a press release.

The tests will allow TVA to study 802.16e technology over 2.5GHz spectrum in locations with varying topology and demographic groups in central and southern areas of the city. US chip manufacturer Intel presented its 802.16e chips in December and is expected to start commercial production in December 2007.

"The Rio trials are expected to start in the second half of 2007," a Motorola spokesperson told BNamericas, adding there is no deadline for ending the test period.

The tests with selected users will assess services of Mobile Tv and video, VoIP, multimedia streaming and data applications.

Motorola will provide the entire infrastructure such as radio base stations and end user equipment.

TVA is also building a Mobile Wimax trial network with Canadian telecom equipment supplier Nortel Networks in the city of São Paulo, the companies announced on March 7."
