National Geographic Books has published a photography book with a difference, it is focused exclusively at camera phone users. The Camera Phone Book by Aimee Baldridge with images by award-winning photographer Robert Clark, is a reference guide on how to choose the best equipment; make better pictures; and store, print and send images. It is also the first to include a full-color photo essay - on Williamsburg, Brooklyn - that demonstrates the full capabilities of the latest handsets.
"By combining photography with communications, [the camera phone] has the potential to become the most influential kind of camera," writes Baldridge. "It offers innovative functions that let you use images to communicate with others, link up with other devices and bridge the gap between the virtual and physical world. The challenge of integrating a camera into an extremely compact, mobile, multifunction device is driving new developments in optics and imaging technology as well."
There are five easy-to-follow chapters. In "Choosing a Camera Phone," readers learn how to pick the perfect phone, lenses, sensors and other accessories. Also included is a 14-page "Camera Phone Rosetta Stone" - a guide to camera settings, tools and controls available on camera phones. In "Taking Pictures," Baldridge describes techniques for capturing the images and tips for photographing people, news events, landscapes and sports. "After the Snap" deals with image transferring, printers, digital frames, portable storage devices, social networks and geocoding.
The final chapter, "Troubleshooting," explains basic maintenance; how to retrieve lost or damaged files; what to do if the camera gets wet; warranties and repairs; and how to dispose of an old camera phone responsibly.
