The Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) has announced that LG Electronics, Intel and the Toshiba have joined the OMTP, strengthening and supporting the organisation's work to set recommendations for service enablers on mobile devices.

"These three major companies bring new strengths to the OMTP and we look forward to their new perspectives on the issues that face the mobile industry. Their advice and guidance will help support and enhance the recommendations for service enablers we have planned over the coming months" said Tim Raby, managing director OMTP.

AOL's Tegic Communications has upgraded its advisor level membership to become an OMTP Sponsor. Tim Raby observes "AOL's extended commitment brings a new dimension to OMTP and we look forward to their enhanced input and involvement"

LGE, Intel and Toshiba join 27 other organisations as Advisor members of OMTP alongside nine global mobile operators and, with the upgrade of AOL, six major sponsors.

The OMTP's four working groups (Software, Hardware, Security and User Experience) are the foundation of the work of the organisation. In 2006 these groups will have worked individually and together to produce five additional recommendation documents, including the 'trusted environment' and 'seamless browser' recommendations.

The OMTP and its members hold regular meetings to discuss the progress of recommendations. The recent joint membership meeting, held for the first time in the US, produced a number of initiatives that will secure the delivery of several recommendations that will be announced in early 2007.

"2007 promises to be a busy year for the OMTP, with a further seven recommendation documents due to be published. Together with our members we are working towards our goal of simplifying service deployment for the benefit of the end user." concluded Raby."
