NGMN Initiative Gathers Additional Momentum
Published on:
The Next Generation Mobile Networks Group (NGMN) has announced a slew of new members, Alltel, AT&T, SK Telecom, Telecom Italia, and Telefonica.
The group also announced that Airvana, Huawei, LG Electronics, NEC, Samsung, Starent Networks, and ZTE USA have joined as sponsors, and the University of Surrey as an advisor.
The addition of new members and sponsors strengthens the role of NGMN in shaping the future of the mobile industry. Mr. Akhavan, the Group's newly appointed Chairman, stressed that the new members will be contributing significantly to the success of the NGMN initiative.
"With our new members we represent around half of the global mobile subscribers. Furthermore, we have operators from all major markets of the world. This representation enables us to ensure that the future networks will be designed with the diversity of needs and scenarios in mind and that they can effectively respond to the needs of a global user base," stated Mr. Akhavan.
Mr Akhavan also welcomed the vendor community to NGMN: "I strongly believe that our new sponsors will assist the operator community in better understanding the issues around technology development. This helps us significantly in creating an effective and viable ecosystem for mobile broadband services and in better serving our customers. The contribution of vendors in NGMN cannot be overstated as they play a vital role in the industry. However, we still welcome applications from other vendors in order to ensure that we can overcome barriers such as fragmentation of the industry."
NGMN is an initiative by a group of leading mobile operators to develop a coherent vision for the mobile industry's evolution beyond 3G. The founding members are China Mobile, KPN Mobile, NTT DoCoMo, Orange, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile and Vodafone Group."
