Mobile Operators To Step Up Fight Against Harmful Content
BRUSSELS -(Dow Jones)- Mobile phone operators are expected to announce self-imposed measures Tuesday to protect minors from illegal or harmful content on their phones.
The announcement is scheduled to coincide with the European Union's "Safer Internet Day," according to a commission document.
The commission has been pressuring mobile phone companies to arm their products with filters and other measures to keep children from accessing pornography and hate speech on their phones. The measures are also intended to protect children from so-called cyber bullying - being teased or harassed over the Internet.
Rather than face EU regulations forcing such protective measures, a commission official said, 15 European mobile phone operators instead signed up to a voluntary code of conduct, to be finalized next week.
The agreement gives the mobile phone companies until 2008 to deliver on their promises.
