C&WJ Plans US$75mn Investment in FY08

Jamaican operator Cable & Wireless (C&WJ) plans to invest J$5bn (US$75mn) during its next fiscal year, starting April 2007, to upgrade mobile and IP telephony and broadband services, newspaper Jamaica Gleaner reported.

Jamaica represents the second largest country by population for C&W International, which has operations in 33 countries, and is the largest in the Caribbean. That is why an increase in market share in Jamaica becomes so important for the firm, according to the report.

C&WJ has lost market share in the mobile business in Jamaica to rival operator Digicel that started operations in the country in 2001.

At the end of September 2006, Cable & Wireless reported a 64% growth in Jamaica in its GSM customers. The company expects to have two million users in the Caribbean by the end of this fiscal year.

Additionally, Jamaica has tripled its broadband client base over the past year through the introduction of a prepaid service, which has helped the company reach a 10% market share."
