ALMATY, Kazakhstan, Jan 24 (Dow Jones) -- Kazakh incumbent telecommunications operator AO Kazakhtelecom's Vice President Azamat Sargabayev said it will launch its GSM operations in February, the Kazakh state news agency Kazinform reported Wednesday.
"We hope that we will launch the new GSM operator that will not only improve performance of Kazakhtelecom, but will also decrease tariffs because of competition," Sargabayev was quoted as saying.
Mobile Telecom-Service will be the country's third GSM mobile phone operator, joining KaR-Tel, owned by Russia's OAO Vimpelcom, and GSM Kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan's government owns almost 56% of Kazakhtelecom.
There are estimated to be 7.5 million mobile phone users in Kazakhstan. Mobile phone penetration is about 49%.
