Movistar Expands Client Base 48% in 2006
Movistar Perú, the local mobile unit of Telefónica del Perú, increased its client base by approximately 48% in 2006, adding some 1.6 million users, newspaper El Comercio reported.
With 2006 growth, the company expects to have surpassed 5 million clients and continues leading the local mobile telephony market, with a penetration of roughly 30%, the newspaper reported.
The growth registered in the provinces during the year was 67%, reaching a client base of 2.4 million. The company attributed this expansion to the company's coverage extension drive in rural areas.
"Our goal is to continue increasing penetration of mobile telephony service in Peru and to achieve this we are focusing our efforts on bringing mobile communication to lower-income segments and to the provinces," El Comercio quoted Telefónica del Perú president Javier Manzanares as saying.
