Montevideo Getting 3G in 2007

Uruguayan state-run telco Antel expects to end 2006 with US$65mn in surpluses and 950,000 mobile telephony subscribers, the company said in a statement.

Through its ISP Antel Data, the company expects to register 102,000 broadband subscribers by the end of 2006. Antel has the goal to end next year with 170,000 broadband clients.

Antel also plans to launch a 3G telephony network in 2007 and expects this infrastructure to be initially deployed in capital Montevideo and in other provincial capitals.

The company is also conducting a pilot program to offer its clients IPTV services. Antel expects IPTV services to be fully operative by 2008.

Also the company plans to boost the fixed line segment, by adding new services and launching a new device, Antel VP Edgardo Carvalho said.

The executive said this device would allow clients to access both fixed line and mobile telephony."
