MegaFon Launches EDGE Technology for Entire Moscow Region

MOSCOW, Dec 11 (Prime-Tass) -- Sonic Duo, a subsidiary of Russia's third largest mobile operator MegaFon, has launched EDGE data transfer technology throughout the Moscow Region, Sonic Duo said in a press release Monday.

EDGE, or Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution, allows transferring data at a speed of up to 200 kilobits per second, or about four times quicker than via GPRS, the company said.

Sonic Duo launched EDGE in Moscow in test mode in January 2005 and all its base stations supported the technology in the Russian capital in September.

Sonic Duo hoped to sign up 5 million subscribers in Moscow and the Moscow Region by the end of this year, the company said.

As of October 31, MegaFon had 4.840 million users in Moscow and the Moscow Region, according to Advanced Communications & Media (AC&M).
