SAO PAULO -(Dow Jones)- Brazil's No. 3 mobile phone company, Claro, led the local market in net client additions in October, taking the top spot from TIM Participacoes, the No. 2 mobile company that added the most new customers in September, according to data released by Brazil's National Telecommunications Agency, or Anatel, Tuesday.
Claro, which is owned by Mexico's America Movil, added 304,800 clients in October, taking its market share to 23.26%.
TIM Participacoes, which is controlled by Telecom Italia, added 281,000 clients, taking its market share to 25.23%.
Market leader Vivo Participacoes, controlled by Spain's Telefonica and Portugal Telecom, added 67,000 clients in October. Vivo has 29.79% of the market, down from 34.54% in December.
Overall, the net additions were the lowest since 2002 and the total number of mobile phones in circulation was 96.64 million at the end of October.
