Brazilian fixed line operator Transit Telecom and Chinese telecoms equipment supplier ZTE expect their new personal handy-phone system (PHS) network to attract 500,000 subscribers in the next three years, newspaper Valor Econômico reported.
Transit and ZTE have joined forces to implement a PHS network in Brazil's major states. The network should start operating in 2007.
PHS is a cordless phone, which allows users to have mobility at home or in the workplace, but at caller rates similar to a fixed line rather than a mobile phone.
"In South America, the PHS network is already used in Chile and Venezuela, and is well established in countries such as China and Japan," Valor reported Transit Telecom's VP for technology Alexandre Alves as saying.
Brazil's third largest telco Brasil Telecom (BrT) launched a converged phone service, similar to a PHS, at the start of August and aims to add 10,000 users in the first two months.
Transit Telecom is looking to boost revenues by 80-90% in 2006 with improved performance of both traditional and VoIP services. The company has some 80,000 customers.
