Siemens to Supply Equip for WiMAX Network in Russia's Ryazan

MOSCOW, Oct 23 (Prime-Tass) -- German telecommunication equipment producer Siemens has signed an agreement with Russia's New Telecommunications to supply equipment for the Russian company's WiMAX network in the city of Ryazan, Siemens said in a press release Monday.

The network is expected to be launched into commercial operation sometime in January-March 2007, Siemens said without disclosing financial details of the deal.

One Siemens WiMAX base station serves up to 1,000 users in a radius of up to 20 kilometers, Siemens said.

In March Siemens obtained certification for its WiMAX equipment in Russia.

WiMAX, or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, allows users to transfer data at a speed of up to 75 Mbit/sec at a distance of up to 30 kilometers. To connect to the network subscribers must purchase a receiving terminal, which usually costs U.S. $200-$350.
