Comstar UTS Wants to Build WiMAX Network in 16 Russian Regions

MOSCOW, Oct 19 (Prime-Tass) -- Russian telecommunications operator Comstar United Telesystems, or Comstar UTS, has applied for getting frequencies in the 2.5 gigahertz to 2.7 gigahertz frequency range to build a WiMAX network in 16 Russian regions, Sistema Telecom's Deputy General Director for Strategy Sergei Baida said, Kommersant business daily reported Thursday.

Sistema Telecom, the telecommunications arm of major Russian holding AFK Sistema, controls Comstar UTS.

The project envisions rolling out WiMAX broadband wireless networks in cities with populations over 1 million and in cities where Comstar UTS already has affiliates or branches, the daily reported. The company currently has permission to introduce a WiMAX network in the capital, Moscow, and the Moscow Region, where it currently is building a test WiMAX zone, the daily reported.

Investments in the projects were not disclosed, the daily reported.

Comstar UTS provides a wide range of telecommunications services with key operations in Moscow.
