Pakistan Passes 50 Million Subscriber Mark

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority's (PTA) Chairman, Major Gen. Shahzada Alam Malik says that the mobile phone sector of Pakistan is continuing to show excellent growth trends with more than 40 million subscribers and 25.16 percent mobile-density.

He was talking to a delegation of Telenor comprising of President and Group CEO of Telenor Jon Fredrik Baksaas, Senior Vice President Telenor Mobile Per Olav Fosse, CEO Telenor Pakistan Tore Johnson and EVP Corporate Irfan Wahab Khan.

Chairman PTA said that currently 29.32 percent population of Pakistan has the access to telecommunication services. The telecom sector received US$1.905 billion FDI in 2005-06 which is 54.11% of the total FDI poured in the country during the same year.

The Chairman PTA briefed them about telecommunications policies of Pakistan and their impact on the sector. He said that these policies have rendered excellent results especially mobile phone services have spread all across the country in a very short span of time making majority of the population enjoy the facility. He applauded Telenor Pakistan for its fast roll out, huge investment and future plans."
