Kyocera Aims for 25% Share in CDMA Handset Market in 2006
US CDMA mobile handset manufacturer Kyocera Wireless expects to increase its market share in Mexico this year to 25% from the current 20% of CDMA handsets, newspaper El Universal reported Kyocera Mexico's director Renata de la Vega as saying.
The company launched three new CDMA phone models in June and expects to launch six new models in October.
According to the newspaper, CDMA technology now accounts for nearly 10% of the mobile telephony market in Mexico, although de la Vega said this technology will increase its penetration in the coming years as more companies invest in this technology.
Of Mexico's four mobile operators, two use CDMA technology, Iusacell and Unefon, though these companies have only a small market share compared to the two leaders Telecel and Movistar.
The executive said the company is also working on developing WCDMA equipment. Latin America represents 20% of the Kyocera's sales worldwide.
Kyocera launched operations in Latin America in 2001 and currently has 25 operators as clients in 16 countries.
