Viva to Invest US$20mn in Tech Improvements

Bolivian mobile operator NuevaTel, which uses the brand name Viva, will invest US$20mn in technology improvements in 2006, local daily El Mundo quoted Viva VP Juan Pablo Calvo as saying.

The executive expects to extend its GSM coverage and add GPRS-EDGE broadband capacity. Viva has Bolivia's second largest network with 500,000 users, the report said.

"The US$20mn is actually US$2mn more than previous forecasts. The company's rhythm of growth obligated it to invest in bettering the quality of technology and service and we can extend GSM coverage even more," Calvo was quoted as saying.

Viva started operations in November 2000 and now has coverage in the cities of La Paz, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Sucre, Oruro and Tarija.
