Brazil ended 2005 with 12.3 million homes relying solely on a mobile phone for their telecoms needs, almost double the number of households with only a fixed line phone, according to the government statistics bureau IBGE.
By year-end 2005 there were 6.5 million households with only a fixed line, the bureau said.
Some 18 million households had both a mobile and fixed line phone.
The number of dwellings with a fixed line slumped to 48.1% from 48.9% between 2004 and 2005, while households with mobile phones jumped to 59.3% from 47.8% during the same period.
The central west region of Brazil had the largest proportion of homes with a mobile phone rather than a fixed line phone at 32.8%.
