Phone Main Display Shipments Up Nearly a Third Year-on-Year

DisplaySearch has released its Quarterly Mobile Phone Shipment and Forecast report, which revealed shipments of 275.3 million main displays and 60.7 million sub-displays for mobile phone handset screens. Active Matrix displays are now more than 53.7% of the total shipments, up from 41.7% a year ago. This trend is expected to continue, and by Q4'06, the Active Matrix share is forecast to be up to 60.4%. Color displays now represent 84.5% of the total.

Samsung SDI has a leadership position in CSTN displays and ranks #6 in AMLCDs. Major customers include Nokia and Samsung SEC.  Philips is #2 in CSTN displays and #4 in AMLCDs.  Their leading customers are Nokia and Sony Ericsson. Sanyo Epson is #2 in AMLCDs and #4 in CSTNs. Their major customers are Nokia and Motorola.  Sharp is #1 in AMLCDs and #7 in CSTNs. Their major customers are Nokia, Motorola and internal.  Wintek is the leading supplier of MSTN displays and is #3 in CSTNs.  Their major customers are Motorola and Nokia.  The company recently agreed to purchase a 3rd Gen Fab from HannStar to increase its a-Si small/medium capacity. Mobile Phone display revenue was $2.9B, down 5% Q/Q and 4% Y/Y, reflecting a 27% Y/Y drop in ASPs. The revenue leaders in Q2'06 were Sharp, Sanyo Epson, Samsung SDI, TMDisplay and Samsung SEC with shares of 14.6%, 13.3%, 13.3%, 8.5% and 8.5%, respectively. 

DisplaySearch uses the display purchases by mobile phone set makers to forecast sell-in on a quarterly basis. Motorola's success with the RAZR and low end phones has enabled it to cut into Nokia's lead, reducing the share difference by 2.6% Q/Q in Q2'06. However, their share is expected to drop a projected 1.2% in Q3'06. Motorola lost its lead in MSTN display based phones with quarterly purchases of 12.1M vs. 12.8M for Nokia. In Q2'06, Samsung and LG gained share Q/Q, while Sony Ericsson lost 0.2%.  Nokia, LG and Sony Ericsson are expected to gain share in Q3'06, while Motorola, Samsung, and BenQ Siemens will lose share.

According to DisplaySearch Senior Vice President Barry Young, "Mobile Phones display revenue continues to contract due to the 20% Y/Y drop in ASPs, even as the industry continues to shift to active matrix displays with larger average sizes. However, we expect the ASP reduction to moderate in the next few quarters, allowing revenues to grow with the increase in shipment volume.""
