Telemovil Increases Subscriber Capacity by 50%

El Salvadorian mobile operator Telemóvil has increased its client capacity by 50% with the installation of a new switching center, local daily El Mundo reported.

The new infrastructure is part of the US$80mn investment budgeted this year for increased coverage and signal strength, the paper quoted Telemóvil CTO Alex Gamero as saying.

With installation of 160 repeater stations, bringing the total to 490, the operator expects to end the year with 98% coverage nationwide.

Prior to installation of this infrastructure Telemóvil had been subject to service quality failures as the network became congested, particularly in the early evening.

The operator, a unit of European mobile holding company Millicom International Cellular, plans to open another switching center in November and more still in 2007 to end next year with capacity for two million subscribers.

The company has almost a million subscribers today.
